Zambo long lining

Zambo long lining

Appy x 3yr old gelding History of abuse came to us extremely nervy and anxious at anything touching him.

Long lining

Zambo's first time in a more open environment (arena) with gear on

Desensitizing

Desensitizing

Some desensitizing work with Zambo he had a few sessions like this with chaff bags. He also spent a few sessions in the round yard with tarps and bags tied around the edge. He was extremely willing and inquisitive towards the stimuli.

Saddle introduced

Saddle introduced

By this point Zambo was becoming more accepting towards different things being near him

First ride

First ride

Zambos first ride was a fairly nervous one, he was very unsure of what was happening and assumed we were out to attack him, naturally his flight response kicked in and he would run out. A few days of mounting and dismounting from both sides saw him calm down and accept this new activity more willingly.

First trail

First trail

We weren't expecting much from Zambo on his first outing at all but he certainly surprised us by accepting everything in hi stride and happily moving foward on his adventure

First trail

First trail

Zambo showed us he was happy being out and about with his ears pricked and bright eyes enjoying the surroundings

No puddles

No puddles

We only found one thing Zambo didn't wish to participate in on his first trail and that was walking through mud puddles

PONY CLUB

PONY CLUB

Zambo attended his first ever Pony Club rally the day after he returned home! We were extremely proud to see this photo pop up as we weren't expecting anything this big so soon. Zambo returned home happy and a changed pony for the better.

Wilson

Wilson

By far the cutest trainee we've had, Wilson is a welsh pony gelding. We had great fun working with him

First ride

First ride

Wilson was a champ and an easy going little man, just took everything in his stride which made him an easy breaker. He was happy to go out and about.

Praise

Praise

If there's anything we can't do enough of it's giving our trainees praise, even for the simplest improvement or action we give them as much praise as possible to reinforce that answering the question correctly results in extra love, cuddles and pats.

Wilson at home

Wilson at home

Upon returning home we just adored receiving this picture of Wilson going out on a trail ride with his young rider and their friends. It's always fantastic hearing about our trainees after they've left us and gone home.

Belle

Belle

Belle is an STB mare that came at the same time as Kody. As with Kody we started her bareback and she came out better for it.

Nerves

Nerves

Belle was rather shy at most things so she would have a good look at anything she thought might eat her.

Comfort

Comfort

We aim to keep our trainees as comfortable as possible so having Belle moving so freely and alert to her surroundings with pricked ears showed us she was happy in herself

Halt

Halt

Something else we strive for is horses with a god set of brakes. Our cue for stop predominantly comes from our seat and position rather than hanging on the horses mouths. Constant transitions helps the horses understand what we're asking and generally results in a good stop straight away.

Walk

Walk

If we spot that our trainees aren't moving as freely as they should/could be we have our masseuse out right away to help find the source of the issue so it can be fixed and we can return to having a happy free moving horse

Fitness

Fitness

We try not to push our trainees to a point where they lather, but a lack of fitness tends to end up in sweats so we try to keep our sessions calm and not too long to avoid an uncomfortable sweaty horse

Routine

Routine

Even though we only have our trainees for short stays we do like to keep them in a routine or at least the beginnings of one so everything can run as smoothly as possible

Trails

Trails

Something we do with all our trainees is trail rides, it's something different to working in the arena and a good training tool for nervous and green horses as there is always something making a noise or in and out of the bushes.

Kody bare-back

Kody bare-back

Appy x QH 8yr old mare Started bare-back

Walk

Walk

We started Kody bare-back first as it was more comfortable for her as she needed to have a few massages before we could put her under saddle. She really enjoyed it and was happy to and eager to please

In the arena

In the arena

Under saddle

Under saddle

After 2 massages Kody was supple and free of pain for us to be able to saddle her, due to us starting her off bare-back having the saddle made no difference to her what-so-ever

First ride in saddle

Forward movement

Forward movement

Easy breaks

Easy breaks

One thing we like to ensure is that our breakers have a good set of breaks. Our cue for stop is kinder on their mouths so when we cue to stop we have an instantaneous response

First canter

Even trot

Even trot

Considering how locked up Kody was when she arrived having her trot so evenly and freely was splendid

Downhill

First trail

First trail

Kody's first trail was superb, she was forward and happy to be out exploring

Happy breakers

Happy breakers

Having happy horses is our main priority and Kody being so eager to please and free in her movement and so happy in herself made our job that much more satisfying

Riley

Riley

Lovely Riley came to us as a bit of a problem horse, she had a tendency to throw her rider.

Attention

Attention

Mostly all Riley need was to learn not to be afraid of the little things

Ditching riders

Ditching riders

We worked through this, even been thrown once, but it came down to the fact that no one had ever just gotten back on her after she ditched them. As soon as we got back on she turned right around and we managed to progress her through training fairly quickly. Testing her on trail rides with traffic, other horses running past etc.

Praise

Praise

Again, Riley would receive praise for the simple things. This girl loved the attention and praise and so we played that to a point where it became something she would strive to get.

Riley back home

Riley back home

We were extremely pleased that Riley's owners decided to keep her once she returned home and they've been the better for it. Riley now participates in a Lighthorse Troop regularly.

ANZAC Parade

ANZAC Parade

You wouldn't have thought when she came to us that Riley would ever be a horse on the centre stage, especially where gun fire is involved. BUT here she is, standing at the local ANZAC parade last year (2013).
